"Ms., I was absent, but I NEED the book everyone's reading and crying about on Snapchat!"
My students are reading Pedro & Me, a graphic novel about Pedro from The Real World. I use it in the beginning of my Government class, to drive home one of the themes of the course: The Personal is Political.
The book came to my attention when one of our former students, a UCLA freshman, informed me that it had been selected as their "common book" for the year. All incoming students read it and would discuss the themes in their classes. If UCLA students were reading it, I definitely wanted my high school students to be exposed to it as well. Our administrator approved the funding for the book, and now we all get to read it and cry about it together!
