Review: Mary's Monster

Although I prefer to amplify books by authors who are LGBTQ and/or POC, I will make an exception for a good feminist read.

I knew nothing about Mary Shelley prior to reading this book, other than the fact that she wrote Frankenstein. This book made me a fan! The stunning images and poems tell the story of her life, which was full impressive strength in light despite so much personal tragedy. As I was reading, I was in disbelief at the revolving door of drama that entered Shelley's life. Learning about how she channeled all that sadness and rage into Frankenstein at such a young age makes her a new feminist hero for me! She was a badass of her time, just like her mother!

I have never read Frankenstein, but now that I know more about the context in which it was written, I’ve added it to my must read list!

The more I learned about the work that occurred behind the scenes, the more I am convinced that Lita Judge created a masterpiece. Lita Judge's in-depth research, amazing writing, and beautiful illustrations deserve all the praise there is to give!
