Review: Speak - The Graphic Novel
I'm not sure any book has ever made me sob and shake the way SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson did... The protagonist is clearly in pain as she tries to move past a traumatic experience. I needed a couple of hours of quiet reflection after reading this, to process, heal, and move on from the emotional journey on which I had just been taken. I have not read the original novel, but the illustrations of this book were so well done, and truly captured the character's feelings as she tries to cope with what happened to her. I highly recommend this book to mature readers and young adults. The book deals with a very sensitive issue (rape), and adolescent readers may benefit from having someone with whom to discuss and process.
