Review: Illegal

"We are people." The humanity of immigrants is affirmed in this stunning and moving graphic novel about a young boy trying to stay alive and be reunited with his family. I cried as I read this, feeling sadness and anger at the conditions that people endure in order to seek a better future. As a Latina living in the United States, I am aware of the journey that migrants take from Latin America to the US, but I was less aware of the journey from Africa to Europe. There are many parallels to be drawn, and I look forward to reading and discussing this with my students.
I received a digital galley from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I did not know many details about the book before requesting it, but the title alone hooked me. As a teacher in Los Angeles, I work with many undocumented students. I am glad that their stories are being told in books like these.
ILLEGAL, by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin releases on August 7, 2018.
