Review: More Happy Than Not
My circle of friends recently met up for a book club discussion on Adam Silvera's MORE HAPPY THAN NOT. If you haven't read it yet... DAMN. The book has twists that I did NOT see coming! It's a sci-fi-ish, LGBTQ coming of age story that deals with some heavy issues. This book mentions suicide and depression, so consider this a warning if you are sensitive to these topics.
My book club gets riled up over everything, so we had a lot of points of disagreement with regards to the book. We fought over Genevieve - was she a good friend, a girl with issues, a self-absorbed dramatic teenage? We fought over Collin - was he the worst, or was he just caught up in societal expectations?
I thought the book was beautifully tragic - a cautionary tale for anyone who is caught in a cycle of self-loathing and depression. You root for Aaron's happy ending, and then you get... an ending. This book will devastate you at times, but you come out stronger and wiser in the end.
After reading it, I immediately e-mailed our department chair, asking her to order a class set for our students, as I know they too will love it!
