Review: TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE
The Netflix film comes out in a week, so I was determined to read this before watching it! I started it while in Germany, but then got caught up traveling throughout Korea and Japan, and finally finished it on my flight back to Los Angeles!
TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE is an endearing romance by Jenny Han. Our protagonist, Lara Jean writes love letters to the boys she's developed crushes on over the past years, and they mysteriously get sent out. (It's not that big of a mystery... it's pretty clear how they got sent out. The reveal is rather meh.)
I love that it centers the experiences of biracial Korean-American teenagers, giving them the opportunity to be at the center of high school drama and romance. I'm really not the intended audience for a book like this, but it's a cute read for fans of feel-good high school romance! I'm also happy that Netflix picked this up, and that it'll develop new fans soon!
One last note: I don't quite remember the geographic setting of this novel, but I did wonder why the boys Lara Jean crushes on are all white. That's one of my gripes in general of a lot of YA out there featuring girls of color as main characters. For whatever reason, they tend to fall for white guys. Maybe that's all that's available to them? Maybe they're dealing with some internalized racism? Or maybe its a way to appeal to white readers? I really don't know, but I look forward to seeing more diverse couplings in future books!
